Isn't there a version of 'Lara's Theme' recorded by the Shadows around 1965 that was never released?
I'd also love to hear the between takes chat, i bet that would be a giggle.

As I have understood, Victor Rust based his book mostly on Malcolm Campbell's books, so it doesn't offer much (if anything) new. Also, it is filled with loads of errors.

UlrichS wrote:The Shadows performed Lara's Theme first on the Val Doonican TV Show (25. November 1967) then on the BBC Saturday Club (16. December 1967) followed Top Of The Pops (26. January 1968). Possibly the recordings used for Saturday Club and Top Of The Pops are identical.

Malcolm Campbell gives a recording date of November 30th, 1967 for the "Top Of The Pops" radio show version.

And after Lara's Theme, they do Putting on the Style, in which John Rostill is brilliant - listen to the end

A pleasure!

From memory, (I've got the cassette somewhere) The Shadows also featured a great version of Bombay Duck on the Top of The Pops radio recording (introduced by Brian Matthew) featuring amazing drumming by BB.

The track listing of the Fremus "Atlantis" CD:

EDIT:

I see that the image referenced above no longer manifests on this page. I can provide the information in textual form:

1. Atlantis (mono version)
2. Shadoogie (fake live - South Africa)
3. The Rumble (fake live - South Africa)
4. FBI (USA shortened version)
5. All Day (Japanese version)
6. The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt (TV-check 1966) (Ø)
7. Lady Penelope (air-check 1966)
8. Scotch On The Socks (air-check 1966)
9. A World Of Our Own (vocal - Patricia Bredin) (TV-check 1966) (v)
10. Wonderful Land (four piano version - TV-check 1965)
11. Never On A Sunday (TV-check 1966)
12. The Girl From Ipanema (TV-check 1965) (v)
13. Big 'B' (TV-check 1965)
14. You've Got To Have Heart (TV-check 1965)
15; Barney's Blues (Radio Luxembourg air-check 1961)
16. Licorice (Radio Luxembourg air-check 1962)
17. Lara's Theme (air-check 1968)
18. Summertime Blues (The Vipers) (v)
19. Liverpool Blues (The Vipers) (v)
20; Teenage Love The Five Chesternuts) (v)
21. Jean Dorothy (The Five Chesternuts) (v)
22. Peak Hour (The Krew Kats)
22. Jack's Good (The Krew Kats)

But as you can see, there's no Bombay Duck there. I mis-remembered the relevant CD, which wasn't the Fremus "Atlantis" but was to be "The Shadows On The Air" (CD x 2) from that Italian label, though it wasn't released because of a change in Italian copyright law. The track was, of course, released on the much more recent Warner/Parlophone CD "The Shadows At The BBC" CD (and LP).

I'd love this CD, pity it's no longer available! :(
