Going back to the original discussion of which artistes Jerry Lordan had in mind when he wrote songs, I've unearthed this from the New Musical Express, August 1960...

I remember reading somewhere that Bert Weedon had recorded Apache before the Shadows, but had not released it.

So that's how to get that sound, I must get one of those XOV amps.

My goodness, I'm not surprised it wasn't released, possibly one of the worst records I have ever heard. His guitar is not even properly in tune!!

Doesn't look like Bruce is playing a Fender there.

Clearly not. He also didn't play one in the 'Summer Holiday' club scene, which would have been later than that photo.

Wait a minute...did Bruce not always play a Fender? Did Hank ever not play a Fender? I think we should be told...!

Bruce bought his Gretsch 6120 Nashville (a Chet Atkins model fitted with Filtertron h/b pickups) some time in 1960.

He was seen on television with it on New Year's Eve, 1960 (the footage still exists).

He once told me that he bought it out of admiration for Eddy Cochran, and that Hank had already bought his own Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman (another Chet Atkins model) beforehand. This runs counter to a story to the effect that Hank didn't get his own Gretsch until 1961.

Both guitars made media appearances from time to time, but Bruce's probably more so than Hank's. As stated above, Bruice's Gretsch can be plainly seen in the Paris night club sequences in "Summer Holiday" (which puzzled me at the time).
