After a while, Windows starts to 'clog up'. As programs and websites are added, they in turn attach extra files, many of which have to be 'looked at' each time Windows starts. If you have anti-virus software it has to 'look at' new files and it has to check the computer to see if anything has been changed. While that is happening, the computer can't be giving all it's attention to you and what you want to do. Over time, the computer takes longer to boot up and all the screen actions seem to be slower.

Often, people imagine that because the computer has 'slowed down', it must need a 'service' like a car, or that, like an old car, it has become 'clapped out'. Very often a 'slow' computer is thrown away when all that is wrong is Windows.

A 'slow' computer can be brought back to speed by backing up the data, then formatting the C drive, reloading Windows, reloading the programs and reloading data. If you are careful, an anti-virus program is not necessary. When a new version of Windows comes along, wait for at least a year while they fix all the problems that should have been fixed before it was put on the market.

If you have already have the Windows 10 “nag” you can get rid of it by uninstalling KB3035583. Then hide the update as Alan described in his initial post.

I’ll install Windows 10 when they give me the option to use Classic Windows View. I hate the “Fischer Price” GUI that it comes with.

Great tip Paul, that should be the "nag" disposed of - many thanks!

True, but the Mac OS only has to be bought once: all the updates are free.
As to software, yes, stuff written for the Mac OS is not always written for Windows as well However, I have old software, acquired from a certain Herr Sasu, that stopped working after Windows 98! I can run it now on my Mac via a free download called DOSBox!!

I have done free updates to windows 10 for my desktop computer, laptop computer and notebook without any problems, so don't be so negative about a free update. Unfortunately some people just don't like change but you have to accept change in this day and age as it comes a lot quicker than 8 -15 years ago. All 3 computers start up quicker and shut down quicker. All software also runs just as fast if not faster. All the drivers for my scanner and printer were also automatically installed. So after 2 months usage I have no problems at all. The desktop is also very similar to all previous versions. I have one 64 bit and 2 x 32 bit computers

I heard it from the grapevine that this Herr Sasu is working on an update (Windows xp to Windows 8) now also including a fully pictured worldwide discography. Track listings, Singles, EPs and 78rpm discographies are done, LP and CD are yet missing.

Me too... 4 machines updated to 10 and it works well, and is easy to use.
