After a while, Windows starts to 'clog up'. As programs and websites are added, they in turn attach extra files, many of which have to be 'looked at' each time Windows starts. If you have anti-virus software it has to 'look at' new files and it has to check the computer to see if anything has been changed. While that is happening, the computer can't be giving all it's attention to you and what you want to do. Over time, the computer takes longer to boot up and all the screen actions seem to be slower.
Often, people imagine that because the computer has 'slowed down', it must need a 'service' like a car, or that, like an old car, it has become 'clapped out'. Very often a 'slow' computer is thrown away when all that is wrong is Windows.
A 'slow' computer can be brought back to speed by backing up the data, then formatting the C drive, reloading Windows, reloading the programs and reloading data. If you are careful, an anti-virus program is not necessary. When a new version of Windows comes along, wait for at least a year while they fix all the problems that should have been fixed before it was put on the market.
Cynical? Moi?
