Postby Sothall Mike » 22 Oct 2015, 10:35

A new thread has just been started on this subject. It follows these postings from the old one. All are together in chronological order. (Iain_P for the moderators)

Hi Guy,s
I can't believe that after all the interest shown by members viewing my earlier post asking for interested parties to get in touch with my friend Dave ~Thornhill, that only 1 person bothered to put a message on hear expressing some interest !!!

After some 160 odd views there must be at least a few of you that would - like Dave be at the very least be prapared to talk to each other about the feasability of getting something going in Cornwall ????

COME ON SHADS FANS!!!! Please give the Guy a call or email him - he won't bite you, We ought to have a Shadows Guitar Club in all areas of the country, not just for the players - but for everyone to listen and enjoy and be part of !!!

I know Exeter is a fair distance but there are some Cornwall-based players who go to one or other of the two clubs there. Maybe it would be a good start to get to know those guys, if you don't already?

Where in Cornwall had you in mind to meet?

Hello Mike - the response is disappointing but I'm afraid that it doesn't surprise me.

I live in Plymouth and tried to organise a club in this area about ten years ago and despite using local radio and newspaper I received just three replies (and none of those actually played guitar!)
Considering that Plymouth has a population of well over a quarter of a million it was very disappointing. Some while later I met up with some other interested folk and we started a monthly club meeting in Exeter which I think I've mentioned to you before.

Is Dave Thornhill a member of this site? If not, he might like to join it?
At any rate he could look at the Club Area and get in touch with the clubs closest to him with a view to making contacts that way?

There was a proposed Leeds Shadows club a couple of years ago but nothing came of that

The number of replies on this thread is not necessarily representative in terms of number of visitors to such an event? :?

Cornwall Shadows Club

Postby Dave Thornhill » 23 Oct 2015, 12:21

Firstly, can i thank Mike, from the South Yorks club, for offering to float the idea of a Shadows club in Cornwall following a conversation we had when i was a guest up there.Unfortunately,no one has, so far, contacted me and maybe it's time to put this one to bed for now. Thanks to all who have shown an interest or posted comments. As I live down on the Lizard Peninsula, day trips to Exeter(min.2.5 hours) are not really practical but we hope to visit in the Spring, when we can come in the camper van and stay overnight.Should anyone in the future be interested in getting something started, say in mid Cornwall, please get in touch.

Hi Dave,

Three months ago I started what is similar to a Shadows guitar club in Bournemouth but I've done it a little different. I have left it open for people to play any type of music (within reason) on electric guitar so this encompasses Instrumentals, blues, jazz, and other genres including singing whilst playing guitar. Keeping it to electric guitars keeps the Ed Sherrin wannbees to the open mic nights that are around for them and we can play our music. This way I'm hoping to build up a mixture of players of all ages and abilities to come and play on stage at the pub to a live audience.

The hardest thing to do in setting up a club is finding the people interested and getting them to the venue but once they've been you'll find they're very interested and they will keep returning, either to play or to watch the players. I've been going to The South Coast Shadows Club since it's early days when it started 12 years ago and now we will often get 60 or more people there a night but it takes time to get it going and it's hard work finding the players. I started off with just a few players in a sparsely attended pub and I've had a few more people each month. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd November when Ian McCutcheon who produces the Shadows Workout backing tracks is coming to play a couple of sets for us so I'm hoping some more people will be there to hear him play.

I've found that although this is a good forum for Shadows music not many people live in our local area so although you haven't had a good response to your idea it is a matter of going out and finding players in your area. Try searching through the internet for open mic nights and local bands and look for some contacts and go to the events and speak to players and others and see if there is any interest. If you speak to people in the music business you may make the right contacts.

I hope this will give you some ideas and I wish you luck if you pursue this further.

Yes, don't give up!

I can think of two Shads players not THAT far away. One is in Plymouth and the other is near Boscastle. I'm sure there are more.

If the three of you organised a get-together in Truro, a few of the Exeter lads might be prepared to make a day of it - and see who else showed up?
