Hank playing in Brisbane Australia on Saturday evening

Postby cockroach » 25 Nov 2015, 13:55

If there are any interested folk who live nearby or may be visiting, Hank and his group are playing at this Aussie gypsy jazz festival on Saturday evening..

Sorry for late notice, I just found the info by chance whilst on the interweb- this is an annual festival for future reference if anyone is in OZ on holiday etc..

Hi all,

I am wondering whether anybody has a setlist of one of Hank's Gypsy Jazz concerts. Would be quite helpful with my year to year concert list. Many thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Ulrich tonight Hank is playing in Wollongong (south of Sydney) and several members of Sydney Shadows Club are attending.
Between us I,m sure we can manage to provide a Set List to help out.
All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian,

You're a gem! Many, many thanks for the set list. I have added the details to my concert lists. :D
At least I now have an impression what I am missing not being able to come to a concert down under! Sob! :(

Thanks again!

You're welcome.
Go to martincilia.com for another viewpoint.
Martin went to the Sydney show on Wednesday night.
Incidentally spotted Keith Potger (Ex Seekers) in audience at Wollongong and had a chat with him.
Turns out he is a lifelong Shadows fan!
Who would have thought?
Cheers from all at Sydney Shadows Club, Ian.

Hi Roy.
When Hank introduced this number he didn't give too much away.
Just said it was an old Shads number with a new treatment and that the audience had to figure it out!
He also said that if you gave him the correct answer you had to buy a round of drinks for all!
Well it took a while to cotton on but when he got to the middle bridge I sussed it out.
It's a shame that you are missing out on seeing him but you never can tell what may be in store. :D
Best wishes, Ian

Hi
It was a wonderful night in Brisbane. One of our Shadows Club members and his wife drove to Sydney to see the show and then back to Brisbane to see the Brisbane show!

OzManouche Festival 28th November 2015 - Brisbane Jazz Club

The opening act was a fabulous string gypsy jazz band from Geelong called Hot Club Swing. They were really superb and set the mood perfectly. They were all first class musicians and singers with great stage presentation, lots of catchy tunes and excellent solos. They also included a couple of very good original compositions. There are some nice samples on their website and a few YouTube videos though the recorded live performance sound quality doesn't do them justice.

There was only a short interval before Hank and his Gypsy Jazz band took the stage - and the magic began. I can't list all the songs as most were new to me but they played fantastic arrangements of Guitar Tango and Nivram and Hank played a shortened version of Living Doll using one finger only - to show how Django Reinhardt was able to overcome his injuries from a fire and learn a whole new way of playing.

They performed the very beautiful Django's Castle (from their album of the same name) and in these quieter songs Hank's unique mastery of tone really shone through in the same way as he produced those exquisite tones on the Shadows recordings. However all the songs were brilliantly performed with amazing skill and feeling by Hank and all the band musicians. Gary Taylor was brilliant on rhythm (and had a few great solo rhythm parts too), the bass player (Robbie I think his name is) excellent and Nunzio Mondio is an absolute virtuoso! Amazing!

Hank was as always the wonderful entertainer as well as brilliant musician with his jokes, audience interaction and smile (where for that moment you believe everything is right with the world) and the whole band seemed to be having a wonderful time as were the very enthusiastic audience.

Afterwards Hank and the band waited so everyone had a chance to meet them or have items signed.
As others there will agree, it was a dream come true to meet Hank - and fantastic to be able to meet Gary Taylor again and the band and Hank's lovely wife Carol.

Hopefully there'll be other short tours in the future!

Best wishes
Rosemary
