As the Shadows themselves stated : "we lost it once, but Cliff lost it twice !" :D

I remember Hank once introducing it on stage (late 70s/early 80s) as "the song Bruce lost us the Eurovision Song Contest with"!

I thought with all the publicity surrounding The Shads during Eurovision that Specs Appeal would have charted higher than number 30 as it's a fine album.
The single reached number 12 which was their best singles position for about 10 years!

Lulu did win in 1969 but not outright: it was a tie.

Anyway, my theory is wrong if Cliff was in it!

The 1969 result was, believe it or not, a FOUR-WAY tie! GB, France, Netherlands and Spain. There were no rules to cover this so all four countries were declared joint winners. The venue for the following year's contest, Amsterdam, was decided on the toss of a coin.

(And before you start thinking 'how sad that he knows all that,' I didn't, I had to look it up!)

Hey, it's not 'sad' to know and remember things - quite the opposite in fact!

I use Wikipedia to check the details of such facts all the time!

I was surprised EMI wasted 'Stand Up Like A Man' as the 'b' side of 'Let Me Be The One' single as it along with 'Cool Clear Air' were both worthy of being follow up vocal singles

'Run Billy Run' never appealed to me (specs or not !) and surprise surprise...it flopped !  :? :?

The Shads Euro performance of 'Let Me Be The One' besides Bruce opening vocal gaff probably wasn't helped any by Hank and Bruce 'bouncing up and down' rather like Bill and Ben The Flowerpot Men
(tho' John Farrar wisely didn't !)

...but then when you are up against such musical genius as Teach In singing such profound lyrics as; 'sing ding-a-dong when your lover is gone, gone, gone...' - what can you do ?
