Sounds just the sort of normal thing that could easily have happened. And nobody would have anticipated a posterity for which it would have been worth making a note!

If the Antoria was that good why did he get rid of it? it does not even compare with a Strat and many
other guitars Hank as used over the years he never seemed to regret it.Other than a lot of sentiment
about it because that was the guitar he started with no one even bothers with it,Now you take the Strats
most people or even all of the members on here have at least one if not many more, but hands up who
as a Antoria.

Hi Folks,

Probably not many people now would want an Antoria, but I got my Antoria LG60 in the early 1960's, primarily because in the book, 'The Shadows by Themselves[and Royston Ellis]', there is a photo of Hank with his LG50. Only the back of Hank's guitar is visible, but I was pretty pleased to get a solid body electric guitar similar to the one used by Hank. Most other guitars in those days were of the Spanish or cello type, with a pick-up added on. Also the fact that it cost £2 and 10 shillings was a consideration.

Kindest regards

According to what's written in Bruce's book, Hank's Antoria was difficult to play because of a too high action.

a guy recently joined Charlies forum claiming to have Hanks old Antoria guitar. It was apparently given to his dad by Hank in the early 60s.

Here is the post on Charlies site

"Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help/give advice?

My Dad was a session musician in the early 60's, he played on a few records and live with some big artists of the day.

Around that time he bought Hank Marvin's Antoria and still has it.

It's still in the original case but in need of some restoration.

He's thinking about selling it, it doesn't get any use and seems a waste for it to be sitting in it's case for so long.

Should he get it restored and what would the cost be do you think? Or just leave it as is? (I havent seen it for some time so can't say exactly what condition it's in, depending on his thoughts and how this thread goes I could maybe post some pics)

Does anyone have any idea on what it's value would be and where best to sell it?

Thanks for you help."

Careful, Hank might ask for it back! :D
Because of who owned it, if it were sold it would go for a considerable amount, plus it was probably used on the early Cliff stuff along with tracks such as Driftin and Chinchilla.

Having started out playing piano, clarinet, and banjo, his 16th birthday present was a Hofner f-hole acoustic, to which he attached a small pickup alongside the neck. Like most British guitars at the time, its strings were extremely heavy, in the neighborhood of .024.

That year, 1957, the bespectled teenager joined a skiffle group called the Railroaders, which included a young rhythm guitarist named Bruce Welch. Attempting to adapt to the newly amplified sounds of rock and roll, Marvin purchased an American-made Vega electric guitaro
Although he had piano lessons for three years from the age of eight, and later became enthusiastic about the clarinet, Hank Marvin's first musical instrument was a banjo which he bought from a teacher at school for £2/10/- (paid up at 2/6 per week). His first guitar was a 16th birthday present : an acoustic Hofner Congress which he equipped with a pick-up. He bought an American Vega guitar from Eddie Silver and used it on the 1958 Kalin Twins tour, before changing to a £30/00/- Antoria solid-body (also marketed as a Guyatone LG50): "It was a solid bodied guitar with a single cutaway, a very small body, and I believe it had two pickups. What attracted me was that it looked like a really good rock 'n' roll guitar. The neck looked enormous because the body was so small, and the machine heads were on one side like a Fender."

Anyone know about the American Vega guitar Hank used as mentioned in the above a lot is made of the Antoria
because it was used in the early recordings but not the Vega I don't know if there are any demo or recordings of it.
