I was among the ones who saw it there, and I always thought it was a loan (may be from the french Fender importer for promotional purposes).

I still wonder whether Hank ever tried that Telecaster while Bruce had it! And if he did, what did he think of it compared to his Strat?

And whether he tried Bruce's Jazzmaster too...

Probably a moot point...if he did try them out, he must have still preferred the Strat I suppose!

Hmm, did he ever use either in the studio, I wonder? For television and public appearances, I imagine as it's the trademark Strat we all expected to him see him with, he never seriously considered anything else.

I think the story told to Peter Clifford that he was buying the actual Jazzmaster played by Bruce Welch was a piece of fiction concocted by a music store keen to make a sale. This is because when Bruce's Jazzmaster and Jet's sunburst Precision bass were due to be returned to Jennings, they were instead bought by Brian Parker and John Rogers of The Hunters, who then put them to good use on this group's subsequent recordings.

Did people notice how different Hank's guitar sounded when played by Cliff? It sounded quit flat and lifeless almost like cheap pickups-just shows you how much difference the player makes.

True!

Then again, Hank could hardly complain that Cliff made it sound lousy- technically it WAS Cliff's guitar after all!

Regarding Bruce's guitars, whatever he has said to the contrary, there is of course a lot of photographic and video footage evidence of him actually using the following guitars at various periods early in the life of the Drifters/ Shadows..

I'm not a serious Shadows gear fan, but even I've seen him using:

Grimshaw SS
Vega
Jazzmaster
Telecaster
Gretsch 6120
Gibson acoustics- both Cliff's J200 and Bruce's own
Martin acoustic with single pickup
Strat (red)

etc

Bruce actually told me that he had bought the Jazzmaster (he didn't say anything about the sunburst Precision Bass). He couldn't remember what had happened to it, but there was no question of its merely going to Jennings since it had not been a loan in the first place.

I understand that Bruce still has the Vega (albeit converted to Burns pickups and wiring) and the Martin 00-28E.
