BBC Radio 1 has a policy of always playing whatever the number 1 single is but when Iron Maiden went to number back in 1990 with 'Bring your daughter to the slaugher' they refused to play it which annoyed me as i'm a big Maiden fan. Typical BBC hypocricy. I haven't listened to Radio 1 for about 20 years as they play drivel these days and much prefer Radio 2.

The BBC has banned dozens and dozens of records over the years.
There are books on them and even CD sets like this one:-

No, "the BBC" does not ban things. Individual programme producers or channel controllers may take an editorial view in respect of their audience. That is not the same thing.

The word "banned" gets thrown around in relation to music in the way "axed" is used about TV programmes, particularly by the press. It makes for a much more interesting and emotive story if you can say "Downton Abbey AXED by ITV", rather than "Downton Abbey not renewed for a further series". In the same vein, the BBC is often described as "banning" a particular track or artist when, in the majority of cases, it's either down to an organisation-wide content policy (i.e. they're not going to play Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name Of' on Radio 1 when it gets to Christmas No. 1 because it contains swearing) or because, as Iain's suggested, individual programme or channel controllers don't feel that a particular song or artist suits the kind of programme they're trying to make.

In the early days of the BBC, when it was a smaller organisation and run much more from the top, then the situation might have been different - as applies to a lot of the records featured in the album linked to above. These days saying that the BBC has 'banned' a particular track or artist is about as realistic as me saying that I've 'axed' caffeine from my diet just because I chose not to have a cup of tea with breakfast.

Don't care much one way or the other TBH but the BEEB did ban the Millennium Prayer. Can't say I feel too strong about that decision just saying.
AND it's pretty clear that certain singers who have very little chart cred either now or in the past pop up on the Playlists but don't sell ,the obvious example being Paul Carrack.
Sadly Cliff is always going to be seen by the "luvvies" as a bit of an oddity ( except when he is SHADOWED!) but his easy on the ear 58 years of hits can't be just dismissed and he deserves his place in UK/Europe/Asia pop history.
Let the BBC fawn over him he deserves it if only for still being around!

Come to think of it, I think the BBC 'banned' God Save The Queen, by the Sex Pistols, NOT Anarchy in the UK. Perhaps for obvious reasons (given that it was the Queen's Silver Jubilee year), but I gather from interviews with John Lydon that the lyrics were, perhaps, misinterpreted slightly and were not an attack on her as such.

I am certainly under the impression that there is a general policy that certain acts/singers are not, shall we say, encouraged to appear on radio playlists - this is probably more to do with Radio 1 than, say, Radio 2, which seems today more like Radio 1 was 40 years ago - i.e. GOOD !!!!

I had to laugh!

Apparently BBC Radio 2 has made Cliff's new single 'Record of the Week'. Now maybe it genuinely deserves this accolade, but remember that they wouldn't even play 'The Millennium Prayer' in 1999. So what has changed...?

Oh yes... Cliff is threatening to sue them.

Seems to me, and many others, that the good old Aunty Beeb is now trying to crawl around him. I wonder if they do have a guilty conscience after all? The next step is that they'll offer him his own TV series and an out of court settlement!

As I say, I had to laugh!!!!

Did the BBC win 'Scoop of the Year' for their piece on Cliff's house being raided - which Cliff found out about from one of his friends, who saw it on the telly?!!!
