Yeah i thought he had no involvement with the Shads after Shades of Rock in 1970 as by then i think he was in Tom Jones's backing band.

The only way to know is to talk to people who were there. It would be perfectly possible for a musician to be involved in a number of different projects at the same time. I can't see any problem for John Rostill to play for Tom Jones, and turn up in recording studios with former Shadow colleagues etc, as well as writing and recording his own songs...

Very true...but wasn't John R in America with Tom Jones around that time?

They were doing those lengthy stints in Las Vegas- where Tom was doing his show and showing his new mate Elvis how to do a great live show? :D

Elvis also asked Big JIm , John and the rest of Tom's band to join him!

I hesitate to say this, but would guess Stuart D might be mistaken over the year - meaning June 1970 instead of 1971. By mid-1971 the MWF operation was in full swing - I've never come across anything to suggest that they were still doing 'Shadows' gigs (altho they were sometimes billed as "The Shadows - featuring Marvin, Welch and Farrar" when they realised they couldn't shake off the Shadows tag in live appearances) and I'm pretty sure John Rostill was with Tom Jones by this time. I doubt whether they would still have been performing Slaughter... in 1971! Any bass playing with MWF was by Dave Richmond or Geoff Atherton, as far as I'm aware. I apologise in advance if I'm wrong...

Sorry Jim / Clive

My mistake there. John's last gig was June 1970., not 1971.

They certainly played Slaughter at Sheffield Fiesta on John's last week with them. They also did a two number medley: Something and Yesterday. Something was the same arrangement as the Shades of Rock version

That makes a lot more sense. In June 1970, Slaughter On 10th Avenue was still their latest single.

I wonder whether the live Something / Yesterday medley means that John Rostill was on the "Shades Of Rock" recording of Something?

The other members of The Shadows have said that John was featured on the "Shades Of Rock" album. It is not entirely certain, but it is assumed that he plays on "Lucille" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". The album was recorded between March 11th and 31st, 1970.

According to Malcolm Campbell's book "A Pocket Guide To Shadow Music", Herbie Flowers played bass guitar on "Something".

Hi Jim

It's definitely Herbie Flowers on Something. Brian played me the tracks at his house and said it was. Somewhere I have a tape of that live gig and the bass playing is not as intricate. I'll try to dig it out

Thanks for that, both of you.

This is intriguing. For decades, the received wisdom has been that no-one knows who plays bass on what tracks on "Shades Of Rock"!

So... can we piece it together?

Here's the LP track listing with the only information I have so far...

1. Proud Mary
2. My Babe
3. Lucille [John Rostill - similar playing to that on BB's "Change Of Direction" album?]
4. Johnny B. Goode
5. Paperback Writer
6. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction [John Rostill]

1. Bony Moronie
2. Get Back
3. Something [Herbie Flowers]
4. River Deep, Mountain High
5. Memphis
6. What'd I Say?

Can anyone fill in any gaps, please?
