Best thing since sliced bread are iPod playlist IMHO - all your favourites arranged in 'best orders' etc . I have about 25 Shads based lists eg 'all tracks no vocals' , 'all tracks with best vocals', 'quiet tracks', 'Hank best solo', 'classics' etc etc

I'll admit to having a few vinyl problems in my time. Strangely, the worst problem I ever had was with the Shads' Life in the Jungle. I must have changed the LP about three times at the shop and each time the same problem - it jumped. In the end I gave up and to everyone's relief exchanged it for a cassette version instead!

I've just been into the local Fopp! and bought sky3 and sky4 on LP. What strikes me today is that they seem to be making (at the moment) more of an effort in terms of presentation and quality. Most albums today are doubles, more room for the tracks, and even those that aren't (as per today's purchases) are still usually housed in a gatefold sleeve which is often superior to the original. I remember the vinyl for my original sky2 was very thin, making the record feel almost floppy. Today it seems to be 180g vinyl all round.

How long this fad will last I have no idea and I also wonder what exactly has brought it about. Is it purely nostalgia - being now roughly 25 years since vinyl was phased out - or is there another reason? Despite all its inherent weaknesses is vinyl actually the 'nicest' way to enjoy listening to recorded music? Hi-Fi buffs the world over would probably say so. It would seem that Hank's people are buying into it anyway.

I wonder if anyone will ever re-release the entire Shads back catalogue on vinyl...

Vinyl has never really vanished, but the vinyl production has been brought to a low level from the mid 1980's onwards. In theory, an analogue sound source is always superior to a digital sound source, because it contains so much more sonic information than a digital source, with its sound samples.

In many ways I think the demise of vinyl was a self-fulfilling prophecy: the quality of the vinyl pressing leading to needle jumping and the incidence of pops and clicks (already mentioned) and the quality of the sleeves (which, in later years, tended to split along the top as well as the side) led to the first CDs being greeted with open arms. I have a fair number of LPs and the quality of pressing from the mid-70s onwards was often quite poor whereas a 50s/60s LP in good condition should still sound perfect. I would far rather have an LP than a CD because of the impressiveness of the sleeve: the gatefold Hipgnosis-designed LP sleeves from the early '70s were pieces of art - there's no comparison with a little CD with its nasty case which cracks and gets covered by scratches.

New LPs with their thick, gatefold sleeves and 180g vinyl are beautiful looking things - they can also be very expensive! The best thing about CDs is the fact you can programme them, so with an album like Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono you can set it to miss out all the Yoko tracks, instead of having to lift the needle over them on an LP!

Cassettes - the ability to make compilation tapes (or 'mixtapes' as people seem retrospectively to call them) was great but the pre-recorded ones never seemed to be as good quality as your TDK AD-90s (anorak, nurse!) and many of the official record company cassettes which I bought would sooner or later start slipping or get stuck inside the carrier mechanism of the player - necessitating hours of careful unravelling, spooling etc. Later ones seemed better (opposite of LPs) and my cassette of XXV still sounds good! 8-track cartridges always seemed pretty good - whatever happened to them!

Just my two penn'orth...

I've still got a cheapo '4 in one' plastic cased stereo unit - from the early '90's (I think..) which has a turntable, AM/FM radio/tuner and amp, CD player and a double cassette deck..with two separate stereo speakers. Brand is Akai, model AC-M345..

It can play or record cassettes (with a proper mic input) or copy one cassette to another, and it can record on cassette from radio, turntable or CD..

Not the best recording or playback quality, but probably one of the most useful pieces of kit!

They don't make them like that anymore...or do they?

One problem with 8 tracks, they used to change track halfway through a number on some tapes with a few seconds blank until it continued. I had The Shadows 'More Hits' in my car and it did this halway through 'Don't Make My Baby Blue'.

The correct title (as given by Goffin and King) is Will You Love Me Tomorrow[?].

True, the lyric contains the word "still" inserted just there in every verse other than the first.

But to a true pedant like me (and one or two others here, I would guess), "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" makes me feel murderous...

Tend to agree! That word is also a key lyrical element of the officially titled early Honeybus song (by Pete Dello), (Do I Figure) In Your Life, covered by Joe Cocker amongst others. Possibly, Hank might have considered a cover too! :)

Just ordered the CD version from Leosden for £11.99 inc. postage. Cheaper than Amazon plus I don't have to sign up for Prime!
